VHF Exam Joining Instructions

You’re all booked for your SRC (VHF) assessment! We look forward to welcoming you. Please read through the following carefully.

Itinerary

  • Check-In
    When you arrive, you will be checked in. All the necessary paperwork will be checked in preparation for the assessment.
  • Familiarisation
    You will have access to the radios used for your examination, giving you plenty of time to familiarise yourself with the equipment.
  • Practical Assessment
    The assessor will ask you to demonstrate some radio scenarios on the training radio.
  • Written Exam
    There’s a short (30-minute) multiple-choice exam paper to complete, which is marked as soon as you finish.
  • Administration
    All necessary paperwork is completed, ready for processing.

Getting there

  • 28-30 High Street, Guildford, GU1 3ET
  • It’s easily accessible by car; you’ll need to park in the nearby car parks.
  • Guildford Station is the nearest, just a 5-minute walk.

  • Wheelchair Access (via lift).

RYA License fees

The RYA examination processing fees need to be paid before the assessment. You cannot take the assessment if you have not paid the fee.

Once you have purchased your exam, you will receive an email confirmation and, in a separate message, your exam application form.

Preparing for the exam

Ensure you have completed the Online RYA VHF Radio course, including the pre-exam knowledge check.

After completion, you will receive a downloadable certificate with a unique code. You must print this out and bring it with you.

  • Complete the RYA Online course
  • Print your course completion certificate *
  • If you do not have a printer, email it to us for printing.

You are advised to read through the Green VHF Radio handbook or eBook from your Online course.

Give special attention to the following:

  • Prowords,
  • Urgency Pan Pan,
  • Distress Mayday,
  • EPIRBS & SARTS and
  •  Licensing conditions.

This is not an exhaustive list but provides an idea of the breadth of topics covered by the assessment.

What to bring

  • SRC Exam Application Form (See RYA Licensing Fees for details)
  • Online Course Completion certificate (See the Preparing for the exam for more details)
  • Passport photo, signed and dated on the back (please do not use a computer-printed photograph).
  • ID for verification – this is a new requirement. The assessor will need to ID you before the application can be processed.

License Processing

Once you have successfully completed the examination, the paperwork is sent to the RYA for processing. You will not get your SRC certificate on the day of the exam, it can take up to 21 days to process your license.

Fast-track License Processing

If you need your license urgently, a fast-track processing service is available for an additional fee, payable to the RYA. They aim to turn the certificate around in 4 working days (excluding delivery time).
